The Oxford English Dictionary defines the word cryptid as “An animal whose existence or survival is disputed or unsubstantiated, such as the yeti.” For the following witnesses to living cryptids, there is no dispute. In this series of National Cryptid Society’s case files, you will read what the witnesses have experienced in their own words.
Keep an open mind when reading these accounts, and also remember one’s perception and memory of an event can be influenced by the emotions felt at the time of the occurrence. The contributors to this series of articles are doing the best they can to recount what are in some cases very shocking and traumatic experiences.

NCS Case File #15: Ball of Light in New Zealand
Submitted by Steve
“Not an animal, creature or monster but a “light” in New Zealand we had lived there for 6 years. I was sleeping on bunk beds with my sister and around midnight, I woke up to hear a faint yet distinct “whing/bin” sound. *bin bin whing bin bin bin whing” a combination of the two but more “bin” I’m like what? A streetlight? My sister playing candy crush in the middle of night?
I glanced under the bed at my sister. Nothing. Nothing. Now I’m kinda panicking and slowly look around trying to find the source of the noise. I look at the curtains and see a faint blueish-white-purple light illuminating them (the curtains were pure white). I slowly spread the curtains and see this blue-white eliptical “sun” 1 meter across and around 15 meters away from the house and 30 meters up ( I don’t exactly remember) I’m like ‘oh shit’ I was reading about lightning balls before but why is this one so big and why was it that shape. Why is the thing so bright but the light it casts is so dim?
I’m not sure what happened next but I woke up late and asked my friend Sam at school who lived a block away if he heard anything last night. He said he heard the whing bin bin too but I’m not sure if he is telling the truth or was I just seeing things that night. I’m sure what I saw was real though. That’s the only thing I have seen that I cannot explain.”
Balls of light have been sighted all over the world, and many attribute this phenomena to ball lightning. From Wikipedia: “The term refers to reports of luminous, spherical objects that vary from pea-sized to several meters in diameter. Though usually associated with thunderstorms, the phenomenon lasts considerably longer than the split-second flash of a lightning bolt. Many early reports claim that the ball eventually explodes, sometimes with fatal consequences, leaving behind the odor of sulfur.”
However, from the description in the report, the object (or otherwise unknown ball of light) does not fit the above description. Nor does it fit into the category of an orb, a phenomena associated with ghosts and spirits. To classify this sighting in any particular category is as yet not appropriate.
