The Oxford English Dictionary defines the word cryptid as “An animal whose existence or survival is disputed or unsubstantiated, such as the yeti.” For the following witnesses to living cryptids, there is no dispute. In this series of National Cryptid Society’s case files, you will read what the witnesses have experienced in their own words.
Keep an open mind when reading these accounts, and also remember one’s perception and memory of an event can be influenced by the emotions felt at the time of the occurrence. NCS Case File #46: The Shadowrunner: Dark Figure Terrorizes Onlooker at the Base of the Sierra Madre Mountains, New Mexico.

The witness stated this encounter happened several years ago, but no precise date was given.
“One night I was out driving. I decided to park for awhile to look down at the city lights and think. I was just sitting quietly when I saw something moving out of the corner of my eye. I glanced up and I saw what looked to be a man wearing a dark colored hoody jogging up the road on the other side of a large empty lot. (The empty lot takes up a large city block).
I glanced back out at the city lights for a few more seconds then turned back to look at the man. I was amazed at how much ground he had covered in just a few seconds. He had turned towards my car and was jogging across the field. The field was full of weeds, brambles, and prairie dog holes. Not good terrain for a run, but he was already well over half way and moving quickly.
I can’t remember if it was his gate, that disturbed me or if it was something else, but I remember thinking that he didn’t have that up and down movement you see with joggers. Indeed he seemed to be flowing across the empty lot. By the time this registered he was about 20 feet from the sidewalk. I was parked across the street.
Suddenly I was overcome by a feeling of sheer terror. I have never felt anything like it in my life. I have been scared before, but this was a totally different level of fear than I have ever experienced. All I knew was that I had to get out of there immediately or….? I don’t know what, but it would have been bad. I had left my keys in the ignition since I wasn’t planning to get out of my car, but I was so panicked that I literally couldn’t remember how to start my car.
I was driving a standard, and the only thing I could think of to do was kick it out of gear which I did. I was parked on a steep incline and my truck began to roll. As I looked back I could see it had reached the sidewalk and was stepping down into the street. I got my truck jump started and drove like a bat out of hell. I was scared to even stop for lights because I just felt like it was still right behind me.
I drove about 10 miles to get to an all night coffee shop where my roommate was working that night. When I walked in the door she immediately asked me what was wrong. She said that I was as white as a sheet. I would really like to know if anyone else has had an experience like this, or if anyone knows what this might have been. All I know is that many years later I still get shivers just thinking about this experience.”
This is not the first time we’ve heard a story about a mysterious shadowy figure.
